Brantley Claunch pitched three scoreless innings in relief and the University of North Alabama scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to pull out a 7-5 road win at Montevallo. Claunch came on with the Lions down 5-3 in the sixth inning and shutdown the Falcons the rest of the way. The Lions then used three hits, two walks, a hit batter and an error to score four in the ninth for the win. With the victory, UNA is now 28-11 overall.
Claunch (4-0) got the win for UNA, allowing just one hit over three innings. He had five strikeouts. UNA starter Andrew Hillis pitched six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits over six innings. He walked two and struckout four.
Montevallo scored a run in the first, two in the second and one in the third for a 4-0 lead. The Lions began to chip away with a run in the fourth when Josh Doyle doubled and scored on a J.P. LaMunyon RBI single. In the sixth UNA added two more runs on a Michael Schmidt home run and a manufactured run by Doyle. He was hit-by-pitch, stole second, stole third and scored on a throwing error to make it 4-3. Montevallo added a run in the seventh to make it 5-3 before UNA rallied.
In the ninth, LaMunyon walked and scored on a triple by Josh Carpenter. Drew Parker reached on an error and Drew Humphrey followed with an RBI single to tie the game. Doyle singled to load the bases and Jake Sloan walked to force in the go-ahead run. Josh Cyr was then hit-by-pitch to force in the final run and make it 7-5.
Doyle led UNA offensively, going three-for-four. Wes Rich, one of five Montevallo pitchers in the game, took the loss.
