Chargers Unload In Series Sweep Over West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team (21-16, 10-5 GSC) completed its third series sweep of West Georgia (17-15, 8-7 GSC) in the past five years, and first since 2009, as the Chargers claimed game three by a convincing score of 11-3 Sunday at Cole Field.

The Chargers seem to be getting well acquainted with the broomstick this season, having swept three series played already – not including doubleheaders. The Blue and White also swept Christian Brothers, giving UAH two of its three GSC series wins in sweeping fashion.

Justin Pearson highlighted the day in the sixth inning by connecting on his first career grand slam, and first home run of the year. Pearson's deep ball to clear the loaded bases follows Saturday's grand slam hit by Justin Riddle. After the homer, the Chargers led UWG by a score of 8-0 through six innings.

Grant DeBruin also had a big day, coming just a triple away from his second hitting cycle of the year. He hit 3-for-4 on the day, including a three-run homer in the third frame. Pinch-hitting, Jim Nelson rounded out the power-hitting day for UAH by sending a 3-2 pitch over the centerfield wall in the ninth.

The Wolves began its late rally attempt in the bottom of the ninth as Chargers' starting pitcher David Kendrick aimed for the complete-game. UWG quickly loaded the bases on consecutive singles before Kendrick was pulled, but the Wolves were able to hit two more singles to score all three base runners with no outs. However, the following three batters were retired in order to end any threat as UAH claimed the 11-3 win.

Kendrick (5-2) shined on the hill overall, working 8.0 innings while allowing just three late runs on eight hits. He did not walk anyone and fanned four batters. Luke Mould relieved Kendrick and worked the final 1.0 inning, allowing two hits while striking out one.

UAH next travels to Pulaski, Tenn., on April 4 for the second game of a home-and-home series with Martin Methodist after the teams met in Huntsville earlier this season. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. CDT.
