AUBURN - Monday was the first day in pads for the Auburn football team as it underwent its third practice session of 2012 spring drills. The two-hour morning workout included individual and position drills, special team run-throughs and some position-by-position and team scrimmage periods outdoors.
"I thought today was ok. I'd like to have seen a little bit more physicality early in practice. They picked it up at the end. When we were full tackle, it picked up some then. We're trying to develop a physical mentality that we need, but we're a ways off," Auburn head coach Gene Chizik said after his squad's first full-contact session of the spring.
"The effort was good most of the day – the physicality was ok at best. It wasn't a problem; it's just something that needs to be brought to their attention to be better Wednesday.
"It's not that they don't want to do it; there are just a lot of thought processes going on. What we're looking for is, if you're going to make that mistake, make sure you make it playing a physical brand of football. The physicality of the game is the number one thing. "
The Tigers return to the practice field Wednesday morning at 8:30 CT. All practices are closed to the public, with the exception of the A-Day spring game Saturday, April 14.
