UNA Baseball Now Ranked No. 2 in Nation

FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of North Alabama baseball team is the No. 2continues to climb in the national polls,  ranking second in the nation in the NCAA Division II in the latest poll released Monday by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

Up from No. 3 in the nation a week ago, the No. 2 ranking equals the highest ranking ever by a UNA baseball squad. The Lions have been nationally ranked at some point in 26 of the last 28 seasons and have previously been ranked No. 2 in the nation in five different seasons (1985, 1989, 1993, 1998, 1999).

St. Mary's (Texas) moved into the No. 1 spot with a 25-5 overall record. UNA, now 23-7, is tied for No. 2 with West Chester (Pa.) at 15-1.

This is the ninth poll of the 2012 season and no team has remained in the top spot for two consecutive weeks. West Florida was No. 1 in the pre-season poll but was replaced by Mount Olive on Feb. 6. Central Missouri was tops on Feb. 13 before West Florida returned to No. 1 on Feb. 20. Tampa moved into No. 1 on Feb. 27, then West Florida on March 5 and Tampa again on March 12. Central Missouri jumped into the No. 1 spot on March 19 but then lost four out of five games.

North Alabama remains No. 3 in the nation in the College Baseball Lineup poll behind Tampa and St. Mary's.

UNA is also ranked No. 1 in the South Region for the second consecutive week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The Lions are followed in that ranking by Tampa, West Florida, Lynn, Delta State, Nova Southeastern, Rollins, Florida Tech, West Georgia and Valdosta State. The Lions already own series wins over West Florida and West Georgia and face Valdosta State and Delta State the next two weekends.
