Tailing 2-1 in the sixth inning, the third ranked University of North Alabama baseball team rallied for a 7-5 win, ending Tennessee Wesleyan's 21-game winning streak. The Lions improved to 23-7 overall with the win. Tennessee Wesleyan falls to 26-6.
UNA got a run in the top of the first inning but the Bulldogs scored two of their own in the bottom of the frame. The score remained 2-1 until the top of the sixth when the Lions scored two, then added three more in the seventh for a 6-2 lead. Tennessee Wesleyan closed to within a run at 6-5 before UNA added an insurance run in the ninth for the final 7-5 win.
Johnny Hornbuckle (5-3) got the win for UNA, allowing two runs on three hits over five innings. Michael Watkins then gave up three runs on four hits over two and 2/3 innings. Brantley Claunch stopped a TWC rally in the eighth and then Ben Seabrook pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his eighth save. Each team had seven hits in the game.
UNA's run in the first inning came when Josh Doyle singled, stole second and was able to score on an errant pickoff attempt. In the sixth, Darrmal Moore and Michael Schmidt both singled and Doyle walked to load the bases. Moore scored on a fielder's choice and Josh Cyr singled in Schmidt to give UNA a 3-2 lead. In the seventh, Andrew Almon singled, Moore was hit by pitch and Schmidt reached on an error as Almon scored. Moore scored on a sacrifice fly by Doyle and Schmidt scored on a LaMunyon single. UNA's final run came in the ninth as Drew Parker doubled and scored on an error.
UNA plays at Martin Methodist Tuesday.
