State driver's examiner fired over sexual comments

COOKEVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A state driver's examiner lost his job after he admitted to making repeated sexual comments to female teenage drivers during their tests.

The Channel 4 I-Team obtained an internal investigation that revealed examiner Stephen Guionnaud admitted that he spoke of topics of a sexual nature with 80 to 90 percent of teenage girls who took his driver's test.

Guionnaud was a driver's examiner at the driver's testing center in Cookeville.

The Channel 4 I-Team tracked down Guionnaud, and he admitted he asked some girls to pretend like he was their boyfriend, but did so only to warn them about the ramifications of sex and the dangers of rape.

"Just say my hands started going places, what are you going to do?" Guionnaud admitted he said to the girls.

After three different parents complained that their daughters said Guionnaud talked about sexual matters non-stop during the tests, a state investigation was launched.

One father, who didn't want to be identified as not to embarrass his teenage daughter, said he was furious when his daughter told him what Guionnaud had said.

"You wanna get a hold of the guy, but that's not the right thing to do," the father said.

"You're riding with these girls, and you're talking about sex. How is that appropriate?" asked chief investigative reporter Jeremy Finley.

"OK, I was just trying to say stay away from it. Leave your boyfriends alone," Guionnaud said.

"I gotta say, as the father of two girls, that doesn't sound appropriate at all to say to a girl during a driver's test," Finley said.

"I guess that's why a father called in and I was let go," Guionnaud said.

"Honestly, Stephen, it sounds pretty creepy," Finley said.

"I didn't mean for it to be that way," Guionnaud said.

Guionnaud was fired following the state investigation.

"We won't tolerate it. We will act on it immediately. It was disappointing, we don't expect that from our employees," said Larry Godwin, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Safety.

Guionnaud said he now knows what he said was wrong.

Because Guionnaud never actually touched any of the teenagers, the district attorney opted not to press criminal charges.

The investigative file also showed Guionnaud was caught not returning nearly $20 from a customer and then lying to his supervisor about it.
