GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Guntersville City Officials want to send a public message to its legislative delegation following a plan to divert $100,000 in TVA funds from the city to a project to control weeds in Lake Guntersville.

While city officials agree something needs to be done, it appears they're not in agreement with the sponsor of the bill's approach.

"When TVA sprayed, they kept it completely under control.  It looked like it does now," said Debbie Benson, who lives on the lake.

Since TVA stopped weed control spraying of hydrilla and milfoil three years ago, it continues to grow quite hardily during the summer months covering up shallow areas of the lake.

"You won't get a boat out. My jet ski would not come down and go out last year," said Benson.

"Sucks them into the water intakes and a lot of people complain about burning up their boat motors," said Terry Goldsby.

Goldsby with Aqua Services sprays for those aquatic weeds on Lake Guntersville and says too many weeds will cause a lake to eventually fill up with silt.

"And we're losing depth.  We're losing backwater abatements because of the influence of these invasive exotic species," Goldsby said.

So State Representative Wes Long is advertising a local bill to take $100,000 of TVA funds in lieu of tax revenue from the city to pay for spraying.

That's prompted a response from the city in the form of a resolution to be voted on Monday night.

"No funds can be diverted from the city through local legislation without the prior knowledge and approval of the city council," said Guntersville Mayor Bob Hembree.

Representative Long said it only makes sense to use funds from TVA to solve a TVA problem and that if Guntersville does not support getting some seed money behind the project, it will be hard to convince others to get involved.
