Chad Bughner and Brantley Claunch combined on a three-hit shutout of No. 1 ranked West Florida Sunday as North Alabama posted a 2-0 win over the Argonauts to take the Gulf South Conference series 2-1.
With the win North Alabama is now 18-6 overall and 4-2 in GSC play. West Florida falls to 15-6 overall and 2-3 in league play.
Boughner, now 3-2, pitched seven and 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just three singles and walking five. After issuing a walk to the leadoff batter in the eighth and then getting a ground-out, Boughner exited and left the game in the hands of Claunch, a freshman leftty who retired five of the six batters he faced to record his first save of the season.
The win was the 18th of Boughner's career at UNA, moving him into sixth place in school history. His 158 career strikeouts also ranks sixth best in UNA history.
UNA got the only run it would need in the second inning when Andrew Almon singled, went to third on a double by Drew Parker and scored on an infield single by Darrmal Moore. The Lions added an insurance run in the seventh as Almon doubled and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Josh Doyle RBI-single through the right side of the infield.
Brian Ellington (4-1) took his first loss of the season for West Florida, allowing two runs on seven hits over six and 2/3 innings. UNA outhit West Florida 7-to-3.
The Lions host a non-conference game at home on Wednesday against Auburn-Montgomery at 3 p.m.
