Grand Jury indicts stepmother, grandmother of girl run to death

ETOWAH COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

An Etowah County Grand Jury handed down indictments for the two women accused of killing a 9-year-old girl.

46-year-old Joyce Garrard is charged with capital murder and 27-year-old Jessica Hardin is charged with felony murder.

Both are charged with in the death of Jessica Hardin's stepdaughter 9-year-old Savannah Hardin.

Investigators say Savannah died after her grandmother, Joyce Hardin Garrard, allegedly ran her to death as punishment for eating a candy bar.

Her stepmother, Jessica Hardin, was also arrested for not stepping in and stopping the punishment.

Both individuals were served with the indictments Friday.

Joyce Garrard is currently being held without bond, and Jessica Hardin is being held on a $500,000 cash bond in the Etowah County Detention Center.
