DESTIN, Fla., – The University of North Alabama men's basketball team placed two players on the 2012 All-Gulf South Conference team. Seniors Beaumont Beasley and Theron Jenkins each received a second-team nod at the inaugural 'The Best Basketball is at the Beach' ceremony Thursday evening in Destin, Fla. The awards presentation kicked off the 2012 GSC Men's Basketball Tournament, which begins March 2 at The Arena on the campus of Northwest Florida State College.
Beasley and Jenkins were the top two scorers for the Lions this season, combining for 843 points on the year. UNA went 15-11 during the regular season and earned the fifth seed at the conference tournament.
Beasley averaged 16.1 points per game on the year after starting all 26 games during the regular season. The senior guard from Kansas City, Mo., reached double figures in scoring 17 times and scored at least 20 points on nine different occasions. He had a career-high 30 points on Jan. 7 at West Alabama. For the season, Beasley also added 118 rebounds, five blocked shots, 41 steals and a team-high 86 assists.
Jenkins also started all 26 games for the Lions, averaging 16.3 points per game. The senior forward from Flowood, Miss., led the team in rebounding with 233 boards on the year. He record double digits in scoring 24 times, including six games with at least 20 points. His season-high was also a 30-point performance, coming on Feb. 9 at West Florida. For the season, he also had 50 assists and also led the team in blocked shots (25) and steals (52).
