HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
School board members will address additional measures to improve business practices at Huntsville City Schools.
Superintendent Casey Wardynski and board members will discuss a reorganization of business practices in a meeting Thursday night.
Such practices involve a range of business operations, from facilities maintenance to technology upgrades. The initiatives seek to address an internal audit that revealed wasteful and inefficient business practices in the past decade.
Audit findings uncovered an estimated $60 million of mismanaged money because of inefficient practices.
Huntsville parent Clay Peake has two children who attend Huntsville City Schools. He said he agreed with Dr. Wardynski's move to change the way money is handled within the district.
"In general, we as taxpayers are certainly supportive of any way to get more efficiency in the system and the only way to do that is to hold people directly accountable for how they expend their finances," Peake said.
In a special meeting last Saturday, the school board approved new consultants who will oversee construction management and procurement in future months.
School officials said Thursday's meeting will lay the groundwork for changes in job structure within the district.
