The 11th circuit of appeals says it will not render an opinion on the challenges to Alabama's immigration law.
Outside the courthouse, protesters lined the streets to try to get their message across.
The judges started the hearing by saying no opinions would be issued Thursday. They said they would wait for the US Supreme Court to rule on the Arizona immigration bill in April since the laws have similar elements.
However, the judges zeroed in on three sections in particular during the appeal:
Section 27, which focuses on illegal immigrants entering private contracts.
Section 28, which orders schools to collect information on students.
And section 30, which makes it a felony for any illegal immigrant to enter any business contracts.
The justices grilled Alabama attorney John Neiman on these particular sections of the law and reminded him that some illegal immigrants, like those seeking asylum, actually have protection from being deported.
Opponents of the immigration laws appealed to the 11th Circuit Court saying that the laws are discriminatory and lead to racial profiling.
Attorneys General from nine states filed amicus briefs in support of Alabama.
Several foreign countries filed briefs in opposition to the state laws saying they could put a strain on relations with the United States.
