FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -
The Florence City Council is showing no signs of reaching a decision on the future of its landfill.
It's unclear when a decision will be made. The landfill is not on Tuesday night's agenda and it wasn't discussed at the last meeting either, leaving the city no choice but to pay thousands of dollars to handle the issue.
"It'll be around $90,000 a year or somewhere in that neighborhood," Phil Stevenson, Florence spokesman.
Stevenson said the city has money to pay for the removal but those funds could run out if the council doesn't reach a decision. The last vote ended up in a three to three split.
In fact city leaders even suggested a five dollar increase on garbage rates to help offset the transportation costs, but that also ended in a deadlock.
"Its a political decision. If a citizen wants to talk with their councilman or any councilman for that matter there are certain ways they can do that and certainly let their feelings be known," said Stevenson.
Stevenson said they have a six month contract with waste connections. Some leaders speculate it may be several months before the issue is readdressed.
