DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Six community storm shelters scheduled for construction in DeKalb County are now in limbo. It's all due to ongoing court battle and now there is no official date when the shelters will be built.

County officials say they really need the shelter as we prepare to enter back into the severe weather months.

Emergency Management Agency officials say The Powell Shelter is planned for construction across from city hall, but work has yet to start.

DeKalb County EMA Director Anthony Clifton said they opened bids in December and were ready to begin construction. There is disagreement between two state agencies that has jurisdiction over shelter construction. He says due to this disagreement there is $700,000 in grant money they can't spend.

Clifton also added Fort Payne contractor Wayne Hill has filed a lawsuit against the county after he failed to get the low bid on the project.

Shelters also planned for Henagar, Sylvania, Shiloh, Fyffe, and Geraldine are also on hold because of the dispute.
