HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Emergency rescue crews and law enforcement officers are seeing more of a new drug that has dangerous effects.
It's called 25-I and officials say it's becoming extremely popular among young people. The drug is said to be a dark colored powder that can be snorted or smoked and has characteristics of a hallucinogen.
Reportedly, five people were rushed to the hospital in Richmond, Virginia after EMT workers found the patients showed symptoms of being on the drug.
Officials in Virginia learned that two of the patients had bleeding in the brain after overdosing.
Workers say the person can become violent, depressed, unaware of who or where they are, and may end up having a seizure.
EMT officials in Alabama say they haven't heard of any cases here, but word of the drug is spreading throughout emergency rooms.
"It is very scary because we don't want to do anything that might be harmful to the patient." said Rusty Lowe with the Hoover Fire Department.
Doctors don't know the long term affects, but short term affects can lead to a coma or even death.
