HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Former Huntsville Mayor Loretta Spencer announced she is running for mayor again.
Spencer served as the Rocket City's mayor from 1996 to 2008.
Spencer says she is running for mayor because she loves Huntsville. She also says this race is not about the past, but about the future.
She also says she is worried about the direction of the city.
"But if we have a grounded, steady vision, there are incredible opportunities that exist for our city on the horizon," said Spencer.
Current Mayor Tommy Battle released a statement after Spencer announced her candidacy in the August 2012 municipal election.
"Huntsville is a city that looks and moves forward," said Mayor Battle in his statement. "That is what we have done during my first term as mayor. We have worked to rebuild public trust in our city's government, to restore fiscal responsibility and accountability and to secure our economic future with smart growth, vital partnerships, and nearly two billion dollars in economic development. Our city's AAA Credit Ratings were a historic first for Alabama, and our city reserves are at the highest level in recent history, both proving our city is on secure ground."
"Our administration has focused on jobs initiatives, fiscal responsibility, roads and a great quality of life. We will continue to do just that over the next four years," he continued. "The politics of the past are over. Let's keep Huntsville moving forward."
Mayor Battle defeated Loretta Spencer 56 percent to 44 percent by a margin of 4322 votes in the 2008 municipal runoff.
