HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - The New Equipment Training Team at Redstone Arsenal recently trained our Swedish allies. The Swedish Armed Forces purchased 19 UH-60M Blackhawk helicopters.
The helicopter units will be deployed to Afghanistan to work as medical evacuation units.
"We've seen different parts of training in the U.S. but this is the best," said a Swedish Armed Forces Major. "As a helicopter pilot, you're rarely spoiled with power in a helicopter. So, this is the most powerful helicopter I've flown so far, and its impressive," he said.
"The new aircraft provides greater lift capability through stronger engines, the 701D engines. So you can fly higher altitudes in hotter environments," said Lt. Col. Heyward Wright, UH-60 A/L/M Product Manager.
The helicopter also has an improved digital flight computer that allows pilots to pre-program routes or change routes in flight with the click of a mouse. The exhaust is also directed to the middle and rear of the aircraft to deter heat-seeking, enemy missiles.
"The capabilities of this aircraft are really going to save lives. Soldiers love this aircraft and they know they're going to come home safe to their loved ones," said Wright.
