HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Three people were injured in a two-vehicle accident on Old Madison Pike Sunday afternoon.

Huntsville Police said the accident happened near the ramp exiting Old Madison Pike for the westbound I-565.

Police closed the ramp and diverted traffic as investigators looked into what caused the crash. The ramp was back open just before 6 p.m. Sunday night.

Officials said a van carrying four people went down an embankment. Three people in the van suffered serious injuries and were taken to Huntsville Hospital. Police said two of them are young children, ages one and five.

Police said the 5-year-old has life-threatening injuries.

An SUV was also involved in the wreck but police said no one in that vehicle was injured.

Police have not released the names of those involved in the accident.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
