The University of North Alabama softball scored 18 runs off 25 hits during a pair of victories Saturday at the UAH Charger Chillout. The Lions downed Kentucky Wesleyan 11-1 before holding off Quincy 7-3, improving to 3-1 at the season-opening event at Decatur's Wilson Morgan Park.
Callie Steadman was 5-for-9 on the day with an RBI and two runs scored. As a team, UNA got four extra-base hits on the day, including a pair of home runs.
In the first game, Breanna Riley (2-0) picked up her second straight pitching victory with another complete-game effort. The freshman allowed one run off two hits and struck out six on the day.
Offensively, the Lions used a six-run seventh inning to extend a 5-1 lead and seal the win. Ashley Bonner led UNA by going 3-for-4 with three RBI and four runs scored. The freshman connected on a single, a home run and a triple. She reached on an error in the seventh inning and scored her fourth run of the day on a passed ball. For the game, UNA notched 15 hits.
Steadman also went 3-for-5 and scored twice while Kathryn Young, Jayda Terry and Dani Colwill recorded two hits each. Colwill's second hit was a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning that provided the game's final score.
Kentucky Wesleyan's Ashlee Winstead took the loss in the circle after pitching the first 4.1 innings of action.
Against Quincy, UNA built a 7-1 lead and held off a late surge by the Hawks to get the win. Steadman, Summer Wilkerson and Shelby Goodman each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Wilkerson added a pair of RBI with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Meaghan Gray (1-0) got the pitching victory after starting the game and working the first five innings of play. She gave up eight hits, scattering four over the first five innings. After Quincy opened the sixth inning with two runs off four straight hits, Haley Barnette came in to pitch for the Lions. The sophomore tossed the final two innings without surrendering a hit to earn the save.
The Lions will remain in Decatur for the final day of the Chillout on Sunday. Weather-revised schedules have UNA slated to play Florida Tech at noon and Augusta State at 4 p.m.
