TUSCUMBIA, AL (WAFF) -
Tighten your belts: If you're caught sagging in Tuscumbia, it could cost you.
Now lawmakers are talking about adopting similar saggy pants ordinances across the state.
No tickets have been issued in Tuscumbia just yet, but police chief Tony Logan said it may have to do with the time of the year, since people wear more layers to keep warm during the winter months.
Chief Logan said his officers have issued several warnings to people, but says everyone has been compliant with the ban.
In November, city council adopted the ordinance banning people from wearing pants that hang more than three inches below the hips. City leaders say it's an effort to keep underwear, and other garments, under your pants, and it seems to be working.
Now lawmakers in Montgomery and Birmingham are hoping to pass similar laws, and there's even been talk about a possible statewide ban.
"One of these things we've tried to do as a courtesy and to educate the public is we warn the person first when we observe it that, you know, there is a ordinance in place and they need to appropriately adjust their pants and we've had no resistance whatsoever," Logan said.
Remember if you are caught sagging in Tuscumbia, you could be fined up to $500.
