State gives grant to ABC Board to help stop alcohol sales to minors

MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Alabama is putting more money into stopping alcohol sales to minors.

The state gave a nearly $200,000 grant to the Alcohol Beverage Control Board Thursday.

The numbers for those cited in Marshall County District Court show there is a decline in the number of citations for those who sell alcohol to minors.

In 2009, there were 14 people cited for selling alcohol to minors. In 2010, that number sharply decreased down to three. Then in 2011, the number only went up by one to four citations.

In 2012, one of the most recent citations from the ABC was January 27th to 24-year-old Cassandra Dawn Wilson for selling alcohol to an underage person at Lakeview Tackle and Grocery, where she worked. An ABC agent contends she sold a 12 ounce alcoholic beverage to a minor.

Marshall County District Attorney Steve Marshall applauds the efforts to keep alcohol out of the hands of minors, but he says it needs to be on all fronts.

He said there's still a real problem of parents who host parties involving alcohol for underage kids.

"The concern is that the greatest opportunity for a child between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five is an alcohol related accident.  That's the major concern that everybody has is that one tragic circumstance where somebody drinks and drives and somebody is killed," said Marshall.

Marshall says there are criminal penalties for hosting open house parties.

In fact, Ina Ruth Toms, an Albertville woman twice charged, is due in court this April on those charges.
