HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The Madison County Health Department has confirmed six cases of whooping cough in Madison County Schools. According to the Centers for Disease Control, you only need two cases to declare an outbreak.

Blake Weber is a disease specialist. His office partnered with Madison County Schools when the six students came down with the disease. The district sent a newsletter home with students about the contagious bacteria. Weber told WAFF 48 there is no reason to close any schools where the disease is present.

"It's an increase incidents in the disease that's here all the time," said Weber. "We're just seeing a lot more cases at one time then we usually do."

Weber's office is keeping a watchful eye on the schools. He wants to stop the spread, but he can't do that without help from the public.

Any doctor's offices can do a whooping cough test by swabbing the back of a person's throat. The results take up to 24 hours. Any positive test is reported back to a local health department and treatment begins.
