FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

A Shoals marine injured during combat is on the road to recovery.

Lance Corporal Brian Felber lost both his legs after stepping on an IED in Afghanistan.

But through it all, he says it's the love and support of his wife, Ariel, that's given him the strength to keep fighting.

LCpl. Felber was part of a unit conducting operations in Afghanistan when he stepped on a bomb causing him to lose both his legs.

In the last four months Felber has gone through numerous surgeries.

"My left leg was originally below the knee and they had to take it up to right above the knee," he said.

In January, Felber took his first steps on prosthetics. He credits his wife for helping him come this far in such a short amount of time.

"If it wasn't for Ariel I would have given up. I wouldn't have made it this far in my recovery," he said.

But taking care of her hero is something his wife doesn't think twice about.

"I didn't marry him just to have fun; I married him to experience the good and the bad with him," said Ariel Felber.

City leaders say Florence Mayor Bobby Irons will proclaim a Felber Day in honor of his service and sacrifice to our country this spring.
