HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
The University of Alabama in Huntsville has amended its housing policy. This change goes into effect in the fall.
Students whose homes are within a 30-mile radius of the campus will no longer be required to live on campus, according to the university.
"As our campus life continues to evolve, we encourage students to live on campus in order to avail themselves of all that the four-year college experience has to offer," said UAHuntsville President Bob Altenkirch. "This experience encompasses valuable learning experiences outside the classroom that are best accessed through immersion in a campus environment."
Altenkirch said that more than 100 student organizations exist on the UAHuntsville campus, including a community of fraternity and sorority organizations. There is also a state-of-the-art fitness center, numerous events on camps, intramural athletics, an extensive intercollegiate athletics program, attractive residence halls and dining venues.
A new student life center is planned in the center of the campus and is expected to open in Fall 2013.
"With the enhancement of campus life that has occurred recently and that continues, and with the addition of amenities such as the Student Life Center, we can anticipate that living on campus will more and more be the living option of choice," Altenkirch said.
