GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A fatal wreck nearly a week ago on Highway 431 has people who work along road voicing their concerns.

Officials say there have been 42 accidents along that stretch of highway. Alabama Department of Transportation officials say that safety precautions have evolved over the years and there is not much more that can be done to make the highway safer.

Austin Clevenger works at Lake Guntersville Ice Cream shop. He said he witnessed last Tuesday's fatal wreck between a car and a water-well drilling truck.

"Cop cars were everywhere," Clevenger said. "The ambulance was stopped and when I came down to the light, the truck was just flipped over and the other car was just smashed."

Officials with the ALDOT said over the years signs have been added, in addition to a barrier and a runaway truck ramp. Trucks are also advised to stay in the right hand lane. One driver said the signs are enough to warn drivers to slow down.

"I really can't think of anything else because if people follow the signs and truck drivers follow protocol and don't accelerate going down a mountain because you could get caught at the light because it's hard to stop after you've been going so fast," said Aja Davis.

Clevenger said officials should change the speed limit coming down the hill.

ALDOT officials say one of those 42 wrecks was fatal.
