Beaumont Beasley and Theron Jenkins each turned in double-double performances to lead the University of North Alabama men's basketball team to a 70-58 Gulf South Conference road win Saturday evening at Valdosta State. The two seniors combined for 44 points and 31 rebounds as the Lions improved to 14-9 overall and 6-5 in GSC play.
UNA used a 15-2 run in the first half to take the lead, then never trailed over the final 20 minutes of play. Offensive rebounding proved to be a key factor in the first half. The Lions grabbed 14 boards on the offensive end leading to 15 second-chance points.
A three-point basket by Jenkins gave UNA its largest lead of the game at 34-16 with 2:20 to play in the half. The Lions took a 36-21 lead into the break.
In the second half, VSU got as close as four points after a layup by Mike Holloway made the score 57-53 with 6:18 remaining. North Alabama, however, responded with 11 straight points to put the game out of reach.
Beasley hit four three-pointers and finished the game with 23 points and 17 rebounds while Jenkins added 21 points and 14 rebounds for the Lions.
The Lions will return to Flowers Hall on Thursday for their final home game of the season. UNA will take on Christian Brothers with tip-off set for 8 p.m.
