Sczeny Hartry hit a contested jumper with less than a second remaining to lift Valdosta State to a  59-58 victory over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team Saturday at The Complex on the VSU campus. With the win, the Blazers maintain third place in the Gulf South Conference standings with an 8-3 league record and avenge a loss to UNA on Jan. 14 at Flowers Hall. The Lions fall to 12-11 overall and 3-8 in GSC play.

The winning basket came seconds after Dana Jackson gave UNA a one-point lead in the final minute of play. Jasmine Horne drove the lane and dished to Jackson for the go-ahead layup with 23 seconds remaining.

After pushing the ball up the floor, Valdosta State (18-5 overall) called a timeout with eight seconds to play. Following Hartry's basket with .8 of a second remaining, the Lions were unable to get a shot off resulting in the team's third straight conference loss.

North Alabama led 29-27 at the break and led by as many as eight points over the final 20 minutes of play. After a layup by Nichelle Fillmore put the Lions on top 55-51 at the 3:34 mark, UNA would not score from the floor again until Jackson's go-ahead basket in the final 30 seconds of regulation.

Jackson led the Lions with 20 points for the game. Horne also reached double digits in scoring with 10 points for UNA.

The Lions will return to Flowers Hall on Thursday for their final home game of the season. UNA will take on Christian Brothers with tip-off set for 6 p.m.
