FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -
A part of U.S history is making its way to the Valley.
The Alabama Fire College will display a piece of steel from inside the World Trade Centers on September 11th.
The piece of steel will be permanently displayed in Tuscaloosa at the Firefighter's Memorial starting in June, but before then it will travel the state and be on display for the public.
Fire officials leave it covered in black cloth out of respect until it can be properly displayed with a member of the honor guard standing watch in memory of those who died on September 11th.
The piece of steel was donated to the Alabama Fire College from the Terry Farrell Fund.
Farrell is one of over 300 firefighters killed on 9/11.
Officials say the Terry Fund was instrumental in helping fire houses in Alabama get back on their feet after the tornado outbreak on April 27th.
"Terry's brother, Brian, came to Alabama last year to bring us some equipment and saw the memorial we have in Tuscaloosa for fallen firefighters, and he said, ‘I will do my part to see that Alabama gets a part of the WTC steel as a permanent memorial to Alabama to that day.' So this is that piece of steel," said John James with the Alabama Fire College.
The steel will be on display from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Cross Point Church on Cox Creek in Florence.
Sunday it will be at the Russellville Fire Department Station One.
This is the first time the steel has been in the Shoals and western part of the Tennessee Valley.
