MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Work to repair a slide under Interstate 65 near the 330 mile marker in Morgan County will cause the closure of a six mile stretch of the northbound lanes.

An Alabama Department of Transportation official said the agency is still in the bid process with contractors, but ALDOT hopes to begin the work early next week.

The slope slide became an emergency situation after heavy rains over the past few weeks caused a large shift in the ground the supports a section of the interstate.

The ALDOT official said the lanes will be closed between the 328 and 334 mile marker. Lighter cars will be detoured by law enforcement to the 325 and 328 exits. Semi trucks will be directed to take the 318 exit, with oversized trucks taking the 310 exit in Cullman.

ALDOT officials said the work will begin as soon as the contractor wins the bid and Governor Bentley's office approves the plan.

Work to fix a sinkhole two miles south of the slide in March 2010 took eight days and closed 16 miles of I-65 northbound. The slide is related to the sinkhole.
