Woman hit and killed by car in Huntsville

HUNSTVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

According to Huntsville police a woman died when she was hit by a car Thursday morning at Pulaski Pike and Stringfield in Huntsville.

Police said 74-year-old Dr. Alma Foggo York, of Huntsville, died when she was hit by a 2003 Dodge Neon in the northbound lane of Pulaski Pike.

Police say York was on her morning walk at the time. A resident said she sometimes walks with a cane early in the morning picking up cans.

The driver stopped at the scene and officers questioned him. Police say they will not file charges against the driver.

Pulaski Pike was blocked off while authorities worked to clear the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

Dr. York worked for Oakwood University from 1982 until 1997.

Oakwood University released an official statement:

The Oakwood University campus family is saddened by the sudden death of Dr. Alma Foggo York, who had been an employee from 1982 to 1997. During that time, she held a number of positions including, at one time, Chairperson of the Nursing Department, Director of International Programs and Government Affairs, an Associate Dean of Women, and Director of Placement Services.
We extend our deepest condolences to her family.
