Thieves break into patrol cars, take weapons

GADSDEN, AL (WAFF) -

Five patrol vehicles from different law enforcement agencies were broken into overnight in Etowah County.

Long guns, AR15 shot guns and a bullet proof vest were stolen from the vehicles. Each vehicle was locked and had the windows were broken out during the thefts.

Officials believe the vehicles were broken into overnight between the hours of 12 a.m. and 6 a.m. Monday.

An Etowah County Sheriff's Office vehicle and a Sardis City PD vehicle were broken into in Reece City.

A Gadsden Police Department cruiser was broken into on Noccalula Mountain. Another Gadsden PD car was broken into in Hokes Bluff.

In Southside, someone broke into a Calhoun County Sheriff's vehicle.

Two other Etowah County Sheriff's Office patrol cars have been broken into since December 2011. The FBI and ATF have been contacted and will be involved in the investigation.
