HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Four players scored in double digits as the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team (16-3, 7-1 GSC) defeated West Alabama (6-13, 1-7 GSC) Thursday night at Spragins Hall. With the win, the Lady Chargers are now 10-0 at home this season which is the best home start in program history.
Leading the scoring for the Lady Chargers on the night was sophomore Jordan Smith who poured in a game-high 16 points while junior Natalie Kelley poured in 15 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Bailee Robinson and sophomore Jasmine Hammon notched 10 points each as well.
Junior Shannon Steinert was just one point shy of double figures with nine points, which would've put UAH's five starters in double digits scoring on the night.
UWA and UAH swapped leads five times in a back-and-forth battle in the opening half before the Lady Chargers took over with 3:10 remaining in the frame. UAH held a slim 31-27 lead heading into the lockerroom for halftime.
In the second half, UAH continued to push the pace, opening with a 11-0 run to extend its lead out to 42-27. From there, it was all Lady Chargers who held as much as a 24 point advantage with 1:54 remaining in the contest en route to the 20-point victory.
As a team, UAH put together its best night shooting from the floor since posting 42.9 percent against Valdosta State on Jan. 12. The Lady Chargers connected on 42.6 percent (26-of-61), including a 53.6 percent (15-of-28) shooting performance in the second half.
Defensively, the Blue and White forced the Tigers into 18 turnovers while allowing UWA to just 37.5 percent (24-of-64) shooting from the floor. Brittany Weathers led the UWA squad with the game's lone double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
UAH returns to the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 4, for a Gulf South Conference contest against West Georgia. Tipoff at Spragins Hall is slated for 5 p.m. CST.
