Franklin County unveils new virtual website this week

FRANKLIN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

It's taken nearly six years to create and on Thursday, Franklin County officials will debut a new website to help share public information that's usually kept behind closed doors.

The site called Virtual Franklin County, will give residents immediate access to maps and public information like road ratings and flood zones.

Franklin County officials say the website basically pushes our Geographic Information System data out to the public for anyone to use. The site is a combination of maps and aerial photos that will allow people to look up geographic information at work or at home.

Engineer David Palmer says the site will be used as a communication tool throughout the county.

It's a great tool for the banking industry, for the real estate industry, for the insurance industry, engineers, surveyors, it covers almost any discipline you can think of," he said.

The website will show everything from school and housing zones, tornado shelters, flood zones, road closures and more. Officials will be able to push data to the web giving people immediate access to information and current conditions based on their location.

Palmer says the website not only puts Franklin County on top when it comes to technology in rural areas, but he hopes the site will help save time and money for both business and homeowners.
