HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

An apartment fire in south Huntsville left one man seriously injured.

Firefighters rushed to the blaze at the Arbor Park Apartments on Spartacus Drive around 6:41 p.m. Saturday.

WAFF 48 News was the first crew at the scene, moments after firefighters pulled a man from the charred apartment unit.

District Chief Ronnie Dodson said the victim was still breathing but suffered serious burns to his body.

"We entered the apartment, broke down the door, attacked the fire, found a male subject, got him out, and he was administered to by the Huntsville fire and rescue personnel until we could get HEMSI here," Dodson said.

Neighbors said they were cooking in their apartment when the smelled smoke and knew something was suspicious.

"These ovens smoke a lot anyway so I didn't think anything about it but then we started smelling paper and wood burning. So as soon as we opened the door the whole upstairs was covered in smoke," said Jeremy Rose.

District Chief Dodson said surrounding units have minor smoke damage and residents can return to their apartments later that night.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
