Semi explodes on I-65; 2 people injured

A semi truck exploded on I-65 near exit 354 in Athens Friday night.

State Troopers said 48-year-old Ray Jenkins of Montgomery was driving a 2001 freight liner semi-truck when it collided with a 2001 Toyota Camry driven by 22-year-old Taylor Callahan of Huntsville.

Officials say Jenkins was taken to the hospital in Athens, no word on his condition. Callahan was taken to Huntsville Hospital, he is now listed in fair condition.

We're told 1 lane of traffic was shut down for awhile due to fuel leak from the semi. Hazmat and Alabama Department of Environmental Management were called to clean-up the area early Saturday morning. Both lanes have since reopened.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. Officials are investigating the cause of the accident.
