HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Columbia High School freshman was killed in a wreck at Farrow Road and Explorer Boulevard.

Emergency crews say Hunter Cantrell was hit by an SUV around 4 p.m. Thursday and transported to the hospital where he later died.

The accident happened near Columbia High School. Police said the teen was traveling down the hill when he rode into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lanes of Farrow Road.

We're learning more about the victim from his friends, school leaders, and police.

"I saw a fire truck in the middle of the street. I saw people doing CPR," said Columbia senior Jacob Elkins. "I never would've imagined that one of my close friends died."

Now students at Columbia will go back to school for what will most likely be the most difficult Friday of the entire year.

Counselors are on hand to help students cope with the loss

"We're just all shocked that this could happen," Elkins said. "He actually sits at our lunch table every single day. He was one of the nicest guys at that school, always happy."

"We were saddened by the death of a student at Columbia High School. I expressed our sympathy, thoughts, and prayer to the family, and would ask everyone to keep his family in their thoughts and prayers," said Huntsville City Schools Superintendent, Dr. Casey Wardynski.

The accident is under investigation and the driver who struck the student does not face any charges at this time.

Cantrell's viewing will be held Saturday, January 28th at 5 p.m. for family and 6-8 p.m. for friends at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel. His service will be Sunday at the same location with burial to follow at the Arab Memorial Cemetery on South Main Street.
