DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -
"Scale Back Alabama" is a 10 week contest encouraging people to lead healthier lives by eating better and exercising more.
Alabama's obesity rate has doubled in the last 15 years. Reports showAlabama is the second most obese state in the nation. Obesity can lead to 30 medical conditions like diabetes or heart disease.
Parkway Medical Center is one of several locations in north Alabama to participate as a weigh in station. Some team members enjoyed the competition last year and are ready to sign up again.
"We have incentives that we are competing for; but the main thing is that we are competing for better health," Quanza Bridgeforth, participate.
"I was able to take everything that all my team mates were able to teach me because a couple of my family members are considered obese," Tiffany Lake, participate.
Participants who finish and are on a team where every member loses at least 10 pounds are placed in a drawing for one of three grand prizes. The top prize is a $1,000 per team member.
