How to help victims of January tornadoes

The National Weather Service confirms that six tornadoes touched down in central Alabama Monday. The storms killed two people and destroyed hundreds of homes. There are many ways people here in the Valley can help the storm victims.

Donate in Huntsville:

WAFF 48 News will collect donations of non-perishable food items, water, and new blankets at 1414 North Memorial Parkway, Huntsville, AL, 35801.

Please bring donations between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. through Thursday, January 26 or 7:00 a.m. to noon on Friday, January 27. Please do not bring donations to this location after noon on Friday.

Two groups of volunteers will take these items to tornado victims Saturday.

Information from the United Methodist Disaster Warehouse in Decatur:

Volunteering

There is a big push to get roofs tarped today before the rains arrive on Thursday. Volunteers are meeting each morning the week of January 23rd at 8:00 a.m. at Clay United Methodist Church, 6790 Old Springville Road, Pinson, AL 35216.  You will be assigned a team and job sites for the day.  If you can tarp roofs or move tree limbs, lumber and trash to the road to be hauled away, you are needed!

   You will need rakes, axes, chains, large trash bags that have built-in ties at the top.Each person will need gloves that are leather in the palms and cloth on the back of your hands.  If you have heavy equipment such as a Bobcat, front end loader, a bull dozer; etc. you are needed!  Everyone should bring snacks and water for themselves. A personal supply of band aids would be helpful.

Driving Directions

Interstate 59 north of Trussville, take Deerfoot Parkway exit. Turn west towards Clay, Follow Deerfoot Pkwy until it dead ends into Old Springville Rd., turn right (North).  The Clay United Methodist Church is 1/4 mile on the left.

Disaster Warehouse in Decatur

Volunteers may be needed to work in Decatur, AL at the United Methodist Disaster Warehouse, 3220 Highway 31 S, Building F, Decatur, AL 35603.  Come to the back of the building with donations and to volunteer.  Open 8:00 a.m. until around 4:00 p.m.

Large quantities of the following items are needed to be delivered  for cleaning  houses with NO roof. Needed items are:

Scouring pads 

Sponges

Scrub brush

Cleaning towels (reusable wipes)

Liquid laundry detergent (two 25 oz. or one 50 oz. bottle)

Liquid Dish washing solution

Household cleaner, 12-16 oz. bottle

Disinfectant dish soap, 16-28 oz. bottle

Clothes pins

Clothes line (two 50 ft. or one 100 ft.)

Dust masks

Pair latex gloves (Usually Yellow for washing dishes.)

Pair work gloves with leather palms & cloth back on the back of the hands

Bag OR roll of heavy-duty trash bags, 33-45 gallon

Insect repellant spray, 6-14 oz. can (Mosquitoes on these warm days)

Air freshener, 8 or 9 oz. can

Nail Clips (No toe nail clips)
