HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Sarah Mason loves to read. Since this past summer, the 10-year-old she said she has read a total of over 200 books.
However, that is not all she does. The fifth grade student at Somerville Road Elementary School in Decatur can be best described as a "helper." She has no problem helping others wherever or whenever she's needed.
"I help the janitors. I help them clean tables and stuff and pick up garbage. I just like to help other people so that they won't have to have lots more stuff to do," said Mason.
Sarah is an honor roll student and also a member of the student council. She said math is her favorite subject.
"I like doing improper fractions and changing them into mixed numbers, and the mixed numbers into improper fractions," said Mason.
"She's innovative, she's a courageous student, she's a reader, a learner, a helper. Any of those things you can think of, that's Sarah. That's why we call her our little "seven habits" student," said teacher Rachel Clay Walker.
The "seven habits" that can be found hanging up throughout the school. Each student is expected to know the habits and put them into practice. Mason does both, and she even knows how to put them into "layman's terms." She explained the meaning of the "synergize habit" to us.
"Me and my little sister, we have to clean our room, so we'll get together and we make piles. So, we say I'll do this side and you'll do this side, so we synergize cleaning our rooms," said Mason.
Mason said she wants to be a librarian when she grows up. She said she wants to help others achieve what they want to do.
Congratulations to Sarah Mason as this week's WAFF 48 Star Student.
