Victim’s sisters talk about brother’s murderer, Jacob Shaffer

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Murderer Jacob Shaffer is behind bars in Alabama.

Shaffer pleaded guilty to killing five people in Lincoln County, Tennessee in 2009. He's already serving a life sentence for those deaths.

But he's charged with killing a man in Huntsville, and that's why he's back in Alabama.

WAFF 48 News spoke to the Huntsville victim's two sisters. They have one question they want answered: Why did Jacob Schaeffer kill their brother Sydney "Slick" Dempsey?

"He's got to be punished for what he did to our brother," said Gladys Birchfield, Dempsey's sister.

Birchfield still has a difficult time talking about Jacob Shaffer. She doesn't like to mention him by his full name.

"It wasn't only that he killed him. He humiliated him," she said.

Authorities transferred Shaffer to the Metro Jail Wednesday. He's in Alabama to stand trial for the murder of Gladys Birchfield and Martha Dabbs' brother, Sidney Wade Dempsey.

"No, I didn't sleep last night," said Birchfield.

"I don't even think he even cares," Dabbs said.

And the sisters want Shaffer to receive the most severe form of punishment, the death penalty.

"Honestly, I think someone that does this horrendous act, the same should be done to them," said Birchfield.

"I wish we could do an eye for an eye, but we can't. So the next best thing is capital punishment," said Dabbs.

"The death penalty is still under consideration, and we'll make that determination at a later date," said Madison County assistant district attorney, Jay Town.

At the end of the day the sisters know that won't bring their brother back, but they say it's the solution best fit for this crime.

"I know the guy's got life already. But that just doesn't feel like it's justice," Birchfield said.

The district attorney's office expects this trial to start sometime this fall.
