State Republican party removes Judge Hawk from ballot

Posted: Updated:

A Marshall County judge running for re-election will not get the chance after the state republican party removed him from the ballot on Tuesday. The steering committee voted to remove Judge Howard Hawk in a hearing Tuesday afternoon.

County Republican Chairwoman Jean Brewer filed a challenge to Hawk being on the ticket citing he wasn't a Republican.

Hawk said he's disappointed and disagrees with the allegations but has no plans to appeal.

Judge Howard Hawk was first appointed to be a Marshall County district judge in January 2001.  In 2006, he began his first term as circuit judge.  After serving as a judge as a member of the Democratic Party, Judge Hawk elected to change parties for this upcoming year.

"I'm very pleased with the state steering committee's decision… This does not mean that Howard Hawk cannot run for office, only that he may not run as a Republican.  He is free to run as an independent if he chooses. This is the only time a challenge has been filed in Marshall County despite the numerous candidates and officials who have switched parties in the past several years.  I believed this case was different and that is why I filed the challenge and I think the right decision was made," Brewer said.

Marshall County Democratic Chairwoman, Winn Beard Harris, disagreed.

"It's a shame that the Republican Party will not allow the voters of Marshall County to select their Circuit Judge through a fair election process. Today the Republican Party's decision took away the citizens of Marshall County's right to vote. Today a Republican Committee, not the voters, decided who Marshall County's next Circuit Judge will be," she said.
