JACKSON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
Jackson County's former license inspector is speaking out after the commission voted to terminate his position.
Tyler Smith served as the county license inspect for about a year. The county hired him while he still faced theft and robbery charges.
Smith spent a portion of his day Tuesday cleaning out his office after the county commission voted 3-2 to terminate him.
"I don't think that I was terminated for job performance. That wasn't the issue," he said.
Smith feels it's all political. He says he's not the only one who went from drug court to county employee.
"we have other people in the county working that has a past and a background," he said.
Smith said a majority of the commissioners knew of his charges before he got the job and feels a little disappointed commissioner Horace Clemons flip flopped on his support.
"He would back me one hundred percent as long as I did what was right for the county and yesterday he came in and told me that he was going to throw me under the bus," said Smith.
At the request of Commissioner Jack Allen, the commission voted to not fill the post until after the November election. Something Smith said he disagreed on.
Smith said he only wanted to better himself after his altercation with the law and now he's learned a hard lesson on politics.
At this time, Smith said he doesn't know what he plans to do for his future.
