JACKSON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
A Jackson County man who recently pleaded guilty to theft and robbery charges may soon be the county's full-time license inspector.
In house advertising is expected to conclude Friday for county employees who wish to apply for the position.
The current temporary employee is enrolled in the drug court program.
If successfully completed, his case could be dismissed totally.
Some feel he shouldn't be considered. Others say it's all about getting a second chance in life.
Bradley Tyler Smith is currently attending drug court while doing his duties as the Jackson County license inspector. The commission will soon vote on putting in a permanent position.
One resident feels the position was rigged from the get go.
"Who are the pool candidates? Of course, is the current temporary license inspector going to be the only candidate?" asked Jackson County resident, Garry Morgan.
Commission chairwoman Sadie Bias said she does not know who all has applied yet but praised Smith on his efforts in the position.
"He has brought in more monies. He has gone to training outside of Jackson County," said Bias.
But Morgan feels Smith should have never been put in the temporary position to begin with.
"He's currently enrolled in drug court. Hasn't completed the drug court. He's also the son, the grandson of a Jackson County commissioner," Morgan said.
But Bias feels Smith is qualified and that everybody deserves a second chance.
"If we do not look at these young people that's been in trouble and give them a second chance, then god, we're supposed to help them," Bias said.
The commission is expected to address the full time position when they meet again January 9th.
