FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

A new commercial complex could soon be popping up in the Shoals, and retail giant, Walmart wants to put a second store in Florence.

The first step in the process is to get approval from the city's planning commission. Just before Christmas they got a good start - initial approval for the project.

The proposed 26 acres to be annexed are located on the west side of Cloverdale Road just north of Cox Creek Parkway near the Heathrow subdivision.

This is a look at Walmart's plans for the area: They want to develop the area for one of their super stores equipped with a garden center.

Although the planning commission gave its first approval, there is still more work that needs to be done before they can make any recommendations to the city council who will then have the final say so as to whether or not Walmart will be able to build in the area.

Assistant planning director, Robert Muse, said before the commission will approve the developments, they have requested to see more information and data collected from the area in regards to traffic.

"One of which is a complete and approved detailed traffic study of which the Alabama Department of Transportation who owns Cloverdale Road requires as well as the city," said Muse.

This study could take several months to complete.

The city's planning department says they have taken into consideration every email and letter they have received from residents either for or against the developments.
