Jackson County man killed in hunting accident

JACKSON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - A man has been shot to death and now investigators are trying to find the person responsible.

It happened Christmas afternoon at a home on Jackson County Road 11 between Scottsboro and Woodville.

Investigators identified the victim as 53-year-old Michael Hart. Officials said he was putting grain in a feeder changing a card on a game camera behind his home when it happened.

His wife found him lying next to his 4-wheeler and thought he'd had a heart attack. Doctors found he'd been shot once Hart got to the hospital.

"We're trying to find out who was maybe hunting in this area.  At this point, we're investigating it as a hunting accident," said Jackson County Sheriff Chuck Phillips.

Investigators have a theory about what happened, and at this time believe no foul play is involved.

"I don't know.  You know, there's a lot of people that hunt around here so anything could be possible," said Hart's friend, Millard Townsel.

Authorities said they're waiting for autopsy results and ballistics testing to confirm their theory before releasing any more information.
