WAFF 48 Star Student: Shelbie Brooks

We caught up with Shelbie Brooks in one of her favorite classes - reading. Her other favorite? Math. Fortunately, both are taught by her favorite teacher, Mr. Gowan, at Owens Elementary School in Athens.

"He is nice, and he's funny, and he cares for everybody," said Brooks.

Many people say the same about her. 12-year old Shelbie is a great student. In fact, she's a straight A student, which she says is not that hard to accomplish.

"I study a whole lot and I do my homework," said Brooks.

When she is not studying, she is singing or listening to music. She loves listening to rapper Nicki Minaj. However, unlike many teenage girls, she can do without Justin Bieber.

"I just don't like him. A lot of other girls like him and I just don't want to like him because I want to be different."

Shelbie is a member of the Beta Club, and she is described as a role model who excels in everything she does.

"On top of always doing her homework and helping the others, she always had a positive attitude. She always comes in with a contagious smile. She gets along with all the other students. She wants to be here, and that's what I like in a student that actually wants to come," said teacher Kerry Gowan.

"I try to have a positive attitude, and when I'm not in a good mood, I just put that aside and think of other people," said Brooks.

She wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up because she loves animals.

We love her bright smile, kind spirit, and her intelligence. That's why Shelbie Brooks is a WAFF Star Student.
