ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

The Tennessee Valley Authority has plans to install a new system that will ensure that sirens at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant will work in case of a power failure.

When power went out in north Alabama after the tornado outbreak on April 27th, 70 out of 100 of their warning sirens were not functional.

TVA spokesman Ray Golden said the new warning sirens will have a DC battery backup system as well as a solar-powered backup.

TVA will also install the backup system at their Watts Barr and Sequoyah plants in Tennessee. Golden said Browns Ferry is first in line for the upgrade because the plant is in a more tornado-prone area.

The backup systems will cost TVA $7 million to install at all three facilities. Work to install the backup batteries should be finished at Browns Ferry by March of 2012.
