Police Chief Mark Hudson said two Huntsville police officers stopped a vehicle near the Westside Center after 2:30 p.m. He said the driver, 27-year-old Samuel Sirvoy Ward stepped out of the vehicle and started firing at the officers.
The officers returned fire and Ward was hit at least once. The driver was taken to Huntsville Hospital in priority one condition.
The officers were uninjured.
The shooting is under investigation.
Chief Hudson said the Major Crimes Unit will take the lead on the investigation and Internal affairs will conduct another investigation since there was a use of force. Ward is being charged with two counts of attempted murder.
WAFF 48 did a quick search on Ward and found out on May 5th 2010, police arrested him and another man for first degree robbery that occurred on Patton Road on March 13th 2010. Ward's criminal history also showed he was formerly charged with reckless endangerment, driving while license suspended, speeding and assaulting a police officer.
