CALHOUN COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

A cold case got hot after nearly 20 years. On Friday, Calhoun County's sheriff department announced an arrest in the May 1992 murder of Phyllis Burdette. Burdette was beaten to death while working at a tropical fish store in Saks.

A Calhoun County grand jury indicted 51-year-old Joseph Lee Fair, jr. of Fyffe for murder. Investigators say they interviewed numerous suspects over the years, but Fair only came on their radar within the last year, after what was known as the 'fish net' case was reopened as a "cold case."

Anniston police initially investigated the case. Captain Richard Smith recalled arriving at the scene as a backup officer in 1992.

"The scene was probably one of the bloodiest you've ever seen.  She was beaten to death with a hammer and it was multiple traumas to head area.  There was a lot of blood," said Smith.

Authorities did not give a motive, but say Fair lived in the area at the time and knew Phyllis Burdette. They also say he confessed. Fair is in the Calhoun County Jail.
