DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - Jennifer Hill's door is never closed, especially to victims of abuse.
Jennifer, who is originally from Milwaukee, was in a abusive relationship 18 years ago. She moved away with her high school sweetheart, and things took a turn for the worst.
"I had a fractured nose, a severed esophagus, a fractured skull and broken in so many more ways than just the physical aspect," said Jennifer.
She said it was the hardest lesson in life to learn. She moved back home and recovered.
And just when she thought things were back on track, Jennifer decided to go on a date for the first time in months and was raped.
She said she had to learn how to love all over again.
"My mom always told me to take lemons and make lemonade. So no matter how hard life is, no matter what situations you go through, take the positive situation and move forward. Better yourself, don't let the actions of someone else change who you are as a person," she said.
Jennifer has been changing lives ever since with her nonprofit organization, A Mother's Care Support Services, Inc., based out of Decatur.
She's helped people like Stephon, a recovering drug addict; Tina, a woman who lost her home but now has a roof over her head; and Dominique, a young woman who was using alcohol and drugs at the age of 18.
"My mom was an addict. She was never around, so in that instance, you're looking for someone to love you, how she was suppose to be. And so you kind of branch out and look for it in all the wrong places. So meeting her, I knew that I might have a small chance of turning around," said Dominique.
Jennifer's mission has not stopped at the house. She's hoping to soon open a resource center that will provide educational courses and a daycare for mothers who need help.
"Some other mother cared enough about me to mother me through my situation and it stuck with me, it resonates in the depths of my soul, and I'm happy to be able to help somebody else through their process," Jennifer said.
